I really liked this post. It hints at a larger issue that I think comes up a lot in development related work (definitely came up for me in the Peace Corps); what role can an outsider play in really helping a community that they don't have a background in? Some say we should have no role because we cannot ever understand something we have not lived our whole life, but I think that view is neither true nor helpful. It ignores the human ability to learn, to empathize (not sympathize), and stand in solidarity. By sharing your story, you and other EdPioneers are helping to make the issues you learned about more real to those of us who know you but have not worked in the places you have. Thank you!

Interesting observations Lydia, and I think your point #3 is particularly well taken. There's a real danger that "charter schools" will become a generic brand, and one that some folks are hoping to taint. The reality is that a charter is an organizing, small-c constitutional document, and as you rightly note, there is great diversity in how charter schools decide to organize and constitute themselves. Thanks for sharing your experience at NewSchools -- makes for interesting reading!
